• Is updating marital status in passport mandatory after marriage for NRI

I'm an Indian citizen currently residing outside India. I'm about to be married in India very soon and I and my fiance have already submitted our marriage registration application under the Special Marriage Act and we have received a date for the solemnization of marriage as well. My fiance is an Indian citizen and resident. I understand that given my non-resident status it is mandatory for me to register the marriage which will happen under the Special Marriage Act.

However, I wanted to know if it is also legally required for me to change my marital status on my passport after I get my marriage certificate.

You should change your martial status on your passport after marriage

2) you need to apply for re-issuance of a new passport. Select the ‘Apply for Fresh Passport/Re-issue of Passport’ option available at the ‘Applicant Home’ section after you have successfully logged in into your account.

3) you have to enclose your marriage certificate to the application

Yea that is necessary. Change of address/marital status and other details which are subject to change should be intimated to the government.

Yes, you may very well register your marriage even under the Hindu Marriage Act, if both of you are Hindus. It is better to change your marital status in your passport now that you will be in India, soon after you get the certificate of marriage. It will be helpful when your wife applies for a German visa later.

If your passed is valid and there is no requirement for renew the same then there is no requirement for add her name in your passport, but in case of renewal of your passport you will have to mention your status and her name too in specified place of Form.

You should get your passport updated in view of your marriage from single to married.

If you don't get it updated on this account it will amount of concealing of facts which could hamper your interests in future and may create obstacles when you and your wife travel abroad together,,when you sponsor her if you are abroad

Not otherwise and unless you are required to do so by any foreign consulates when and if you want to go abroad on a 'Spouse Visa' to stay with your spouse already working there on a 'Work Visa'.
