I am an Adult domiciled in Maharashtra and currently living with my Mom and Stepfather. My mother and biological father separated through mutual consent (without any legal proceeding) 18 yrs back. My mother got remarried 14 yrs back. I am thinking of changing my current surname to stepfather surname and also my current middle name to my stepfather name. Can I do this directly through the government gazette or do I need to get an adoption deed for doing so. Please let me know the process and also if there would be any implications in future after doing so or should I only change my surname. All my current documents (Employment, Pan, Aadhaar, passport are with old surname and middle name. Also my property documents have my old name. Please help.

Your step father needs to adopt you through a case that needs to be filed under Wardens and Guardianship Act. Thereafter receiving order you need to make paper publication, then fill a form with Gazette and collect gazette papers , then change all documents of your need with your choiceable name or surname
1) no deed of adoption can be executed at this stage as you already an adult
2) further for execution of deed of adoption biological father consent is necessary
3) you can change your name by notification in official gazette and 2 local newspapers

Dear Client,
Through Govt. gazette, you will need to submit proof of Divorce/2nd marriage certificate but dissolution of marriage do not effects the right of child from his father.
So, Adoption deed is advisable, this way, you will become first class legal heir of ur new father and ties with old family will cease except marriage in blood relation.
Change of surname and in documents may possible only after declaration via official gazette and on the basis of adoption deed, it may process.
You are an adult hence it will not legally possible for your step father to adopt you.
Moreover ther was no legal divorce between your mother and your biological father,. hence your mother cannot give you in adoption to your stepfather without the consent of your biological father.
You can add your stepfather's name by following the procedure for change of name and cannot officially claim that he is your father on the basis of the changed name.
You may get the same changed by means of an affidavit and subsequent publication in the newspaper.
Though the name in the ID's can be changed but it will be impossible to get the name changed in the educational certificates.
Regards
Thanks for your valuable inputs. Without the adoption deed in place can I change my middle name to Stepfather name and stepfather surname through the gazette. Does the gazette allow to change middle name and surname without any of such documents.
It is just a change of your name and it will not indicate the surname or first name or the last name.
The existing structure of your name shall be changed as per your dsire for the name to appear, through gazette publication.
you are at liberty to change your surname to that of your step father through gazette notification and publication in 2 local newspapers
On what substance, authorities will order gazette to change ur last name. Even if ur mother divorced, ur ties with ur father do not cease.
may apply/try to authorities to change ur name with new father`s name on the basis of marriage registration annexed with affidavit./bond that u r willing to end all ur ties n inheritance right from ur biological father ( if needed) and also NOC of ur new father that he has no objection to adopt ur name.
Last name are acquired from father and for any change in the surname/case/religion, due process of law is to be followed except first name.
Execute an affidavit to this effect.
Bring out a paper publication.
After the newspaper publication, get this published in the gazette.
