Can society members & local police question a sister staying in house owned by her brother?

I am a 40 year old married woman. My family stays in a house owned by my brother who resides outside India. Since he stays outside India. We started living in his house to accompany our mother. My mother passed away few years back. Since then the society members have been pestering us to submit a copy of registration saying that we are a tenat in my own brother's house. Also the want a police verification certificate. My queries are as below:- 1) I am staying in my brother's house with mutual understanding. I am not paying any rent for the place. So in this case where does the necessity arise for a agreement/registration. 2) Since we are not a tenat and a blood relative where does the question arise for us to even go for a police registration. I can provide a copy from my brother stating that we reside here in his absence. But police verification further on that sounds insane. What provision does Indian law have when the tenat is a sister herself who is staying in her brother owned flat on a mutual understanding without any money involved in the transaction? Is it fair on the committee members to demand for such details? Please guide.
