What legal action can be taken if a person fails to pay the amount in lieu of notice period?

Hello, My friend had joined a privately owned construction firm in Gandhinagar in May 2017. The company is actually owned by one of his relatives. He had to be on leave for about a month, the entire February, due to some health conditions. He decided not to continue with the job and re-joined the company on 3rd March, 2018 and put down his papers on 8th March, 2018. He had given his resignation on paper and there is no formal record of it being given or accepted. His last working day was 8th March as chosen by him. He needs to pay some outstanding amount but the company is not willing to give in writing either about the dues pending or the resignation acceptance. Verbally, however, the resignation was accepted. Now they are threatening to take legal action against my friend who is in fear of getting arrested. He is unable to manage the pending amount and needs some more time for the same. Kindly suggest if it is legally possible to get a person arrested for this. Also what could be the further legal actions against the employee. Thanks.
