• Applying for replacement PAN card as an OCI

I am missing my PAN card and need to get a replacement. When I first obtained my PAN number, I was an Indian citizen, but now I am a foreign citizen with an OCI. How do I change my citizenship when applying for a replacement PAN card?

https://www.onlineservices.nsdl.com/paam/endUserRegisterContact.html

The website did not give me the option to change my citizenship, and only allows me to get a replacement PAN card by stating that I am an Indian citizen, which is no longer true.

And I don't think I should apply for a new one since its illegal to have two.

an OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) can acquire a PAN card. These scenarios are:

  • If the non-resident Indian or Overseas Citizen of India is earning taxable income in India
  • If they are trading in shares through depository or brokerage
  • If they wish to invest in mutual funds
  • If they want to purchase a property in India (for other than trading purposes)

To apply for a PAN card, OCI card holder will have to perform the following steps:

  1. Download and fill form 49AA from https://www.tin-nsdl.com/downloads/pan/download/Form_49AA.PDF

Particulars of citizenship are not mentioned in PAN. After acquisition of  OCI, you need to apply for fresh PAN as OCI/Foreign Citizen. There is no provision  of change of citizenship in PAN.

If your PAN card is lost, visit the Income Tax PAN website (https://www.pan.utiitsl.com/PAN/reprint.html) and select the 'Reprint of PAN Card' option. This option is for people who have already been allotted a pan number as only then another copy of that PAN card will be issued.

For change of detail in PAN Card:

Visit NSDL online websiteApply for Change in Pan detailsSubmit the changes requiredOpt for Pan Card delivery (over email or in Physical Form) and pay the fee.

  1. Visit the online TIN portal and click on “Apply Online”.
  2. Under “Application Type”, select Form 49A for NRIs with Indian citizenship and Form 49AA for those with foreign citizenship.
  3. Fill in other required details, enter the captcha and hit “Submit”.
  4. The next page will redirect you to the NRI PAN card application form. Fill it in accurately,  upload essential documents and your signature, and submit.
  5. Now, make your transaction on the payment page to complete the process.
Upon completing the above steps for an online PAN card application for an NRI, you will receive an acknowledgement slip containing a 15-digit number. This number can help you check your application status afterwards.

- PAN card is a card /document , which is required for filing taxes in India.

- Hence, there is no provision to change citizenship in a Pan Card and the PAN card also showing no citizenship.

- Since, you already issued PAN card in your name , then you can apply for a duplicate PAN card after providing the PAN number .

- However , as you will applied from a foreign country , then you will have to pay Rs.1011/ for getting the same on your foreign address.

-  You can submit the following documents copies:

1. Passport

2. OCI Card

3. Bank Account Statement in the country of residence

4. NRE Bank Account Statement in India

5. Residential Permit

You can apply the same.

Apply using 49AA form for NRI/OCI/ Foreign citizens. All details are given in the form 49AA. PAN card will be delivered to your local Indian address too, you can show your OCI card with local address proof, or bank address.

Dear Client,

There are no direct provisions to change citizenship in a Pan Card as the PAN Card doesn’t display your citizenship. If you have a PAN Card and later become an NRI/OCI, it is advisable that you continue using the same PAN Card. Alternatively, its easier to just update your KYC in banks and for your investments.

Thank You.
