Whenever you realise that you have been hit by a fraud via a digital transaction, you must first save screenshots of any SMS, email, fraudulent website, UPI handle or mobile number through which the fraud occurred. In case the mode of payment is any e-commerce platform a screenshot of the merchant’s web page should be saved. Customers should also note down any transaction ID numbers, in any of the above instances.
Your first stop is the bank, NBFC or payment platform you were using when defrauded. In the case of UPI, you should report the fraud to both their bank and the payment company whether it is Google Pay, Paytm, PhonePe or others. Here you can simply file the complaint with the card issuing bank via online method. Once the complaint has been registered with the concerned company, you should file a first information report or FIR with the local cyber-crime police department. The Ministry of Home Affairs has a specific portal related to cyber-crimes, listing the relevant cyber-crime police stations across states. Thus, implying you do not have to travel for all the procedures and can do everything using online portals available to you.
