• Civil marriage on 30 day tourist visa

I am a US passport holder currently in Sri Lanka. My fiancé and I would like to marry in a civil ceremony. I have a ten year tourist visa but as you know they are currently suspended. How can we complete the marriage process in light of the fact I can only get a 30 day tourist visa at this time.

Both bride (hope the bride is an Indian) and groom must be either in India or in Srilanka. If you are in India, you can register your marriage as per the Special Marriage Act by giving 1 month's notice, and the marriage will be solemnized before the Sub-Registrar. If you are in Srilanka, you can register as per the same law at the Indian High commission in Srilanka. This is the usual procedure. If you can't come to India for marriage, you can approach the court and get an order for getting excemption

In Delhi, there is online booking for registration of court marriage.  Kindly check and book online registration within those 30 days.  The documents desired to be submitted as required in the form/field can be attached. The booking may be fixed on the very first day of your visit so that you get 29 days to complete the formalities, if remained.

Presuming that you would like to get your marriage solemnised as per Sri Lanka laws:

Sri Lanka has made it mandatory for foreigners to get a clearance from the Defence Ministry if they wish to marry locals due to national security reasons. The new law will come into effect from January 1, 2022.

The Government has made a decision to register such marriages only through the Additional District Registrars after obtaining a “security clearance report” related to the foreign party.

The security clearance report will certify that the foreign party was free of being convicted for any offence during the last six months, the circular reads.

Government officials said that the move was important as to prevent locals from being duped by foreigners to marriages and to check the increasing numbers of drug peddling by foreigners marrying locals.

Your tourist visa can be extended up to 180 on an application.

  • Passport with two unused visa pages (validity should be at least six months from the date you arrive in Sri Lanka)
  • Copy of Passport (Data page/Photo page)

Dear Client,

Since a 10 year tourist visa is a required document for the civil ceremony in marriage, it is tough to ascertain whether the registrar would take into account your visa suspension case. However, your wedding certificate should be issued in Sinhala, which is issued immediately and might need to be translated into English in order for it to be legally recognised in your own country and mostly translation can take up to 3 days. Hence, the marriage process can most probably be completed within 30 days if registrar considers your request.

Thanks & Regards
