• Licenses/set up required for non-alcoholic beverage in SSI

Sir,
Is it possible to set up a fruit juice factory without FSSAI license? Must I have on premise working laboratory for this?

I fall under Small Scale Industry category. I have observed many sealed food items in market without FSSAI stamp. How they possibly do it?

If you fall within the category of small scale industry ten getting necessary licences for setting up of such factiries is easy.

However if the same is food items like fruit juice then license from FSSAI is mandatory.

DO not start manufacturing food items without mandatory provisions else you can be prosecuted both under civil and criminal wrongdoings.

The requirement for registration and license would vary based on the format of the fresh fruit juice business. Unorganised fresh fruit juice shops seldom have any registrations except for a FSSAI registration. However, large format juice shops that have plans for creating a franchise model are typically established as a private limited company with FSSAI license to accommodate future scaling up of the business.

Pre-packaged fresh fruit juice businesses are almost always created as a private limited company to have easier access to bank or equity funding. Further, establishing a business as a corporate entity will also ensure its easily transferable, provides limited liability protection and has perpetual existence.

Registration or licensing with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India is a must for all juice shops or juice businesses. The requirement between FSSAI registration and FSSAI license would vary based on the type and scale of the fruit juice business. In addition to the FSSAI license or registration, testing of bottled juices for various parameters and compliance with food labelling regulations in would might be mandated by FSSAI to ensure the product is safe for consumption.

All kinds of thermally processed fruit and vegetable juices, either canned or bottled, are mandatorily to be licensed under the Food Safety and Standards Regulation, 2010.

For clarity on this, you are advised to meet the representatives from FSSAI Dept. in Kolkata.

FSSAI registration is mandatorily required for business who have an annual turn over of less than 12 Lakhs.

You will be registered as manufacturer.

Also, FSSAI agents will basically check the water quality, they will take sample of the product to check that the ingredients mentioned by you in the label are present or not, and also they will check that there is no material in the product which is not as per the rules.
