Dear Sir,
At the current time – most gambling in India is illegal. However, legal gambling does exist for horse racing, lottery, and rummy (paplu). There is also a high number of betting sites legal in the UK which service Indian players with only minor hassles.
Broadly, there is no precise legal framework to regulate online betting in India at the moment. Gambling activity is a state subject and is governed by the 150 year old Public Gambling Act of 1867. Subject to state sanction, gambling is declared as illegal in most state of India, barring Sikkim, Daman, and Goa. Nevertheless since online betting doesn’t find an explicit mention in the Act, most companies open offshore entities to operate and bypass this legal loophole - so technically one can bet through them but there is an underlying risk of course.
Dear Sir,
- Betting has illegal in India due to a very old law called The Public Gambling Act, 1867.
- Section 108 (1) of the Delhi Police Act, 1978 provides for punishment for cheating in games
- Only, countries like South Africa and the United Kingdom have a legal system which allows people to participate in betting
- In India betting on anything but horse racing is statutorily illegal as per the provisions of the IPC and the Indian Contract Act(contract for enforcement of a wager being void)

1. In normal circumstances, any type of gambling is prohibited by law, UNLESS proper permission is taken from the Commissioner /Superintendent (police dept.)
2. Illegal gambling is a prosecutable offence with Fine and imprisonment.
Betting on cricket will be legal, only once it is established that cricket is a game of skill. Cricket has still not been recognised as a game of skill. Till then, this remains a grey area.
