First of all you should justify that why you had been there to that place from where you have received the notice, if you are not involved in any incidence that took place in that place then the police have no reason to summon you for investigation.
Thus, this age cannot be claimed as an excuse for taking an exemption to attend the police station.
However you may write to the police mentioning your hardships and difficulties to travel such a long distance for this purpose, hence you may be permitted to send your statement by post from your place.
The police may or may not accede to your request.
