Looking for advice on legal validity of landlord's actions

I and around 12 other people have independently taken rooms on rent from a company ... The business of the company is to provide rental accommodations. In just over 3 months various issues have come up on the property, maintenance of which was to be taken care of them. But they haven't taken care of these issues. Moreover, there is a lot of dissonance in all the communications by the company. Different people of the company come up with different stories on the issues reported by us, their handling etc. They have also increased our total expenditure by playing around with the terms of the contract though almost the whole building is ready to attest to the verbal components of the contract as they had promised. And finally, as they were not taking the situation seriously, we decided to wait on paying the rent to force them on to the negotiation table. But they have taken to giving threats of levying penalties as well as reporting us to credit agencies. A lot more information is available with me.
