Limitiation period tor recovery of erroneous interest credited by the bank in customer's a/c

I had few fixed deposits (with quarterly interest option) of 10 yrs. tenure with a nationalised bank. In year 2005, bank had migrated to a new software and had manually transferred lumpsum amount of Rs. 83,654/- in my account towards interest of FD's. In June 2017, bank wrote a letter to me stating that "an amount of rs. 83,654/- credited in June 2005 was an error on bank's. Kindly check your records and arrange to repay the amount in case the same is double payment on part of the bank". Unfortunately, I could not trace monthly transaction statements, fixed deposit receipts and correspondence with the bank prior to FY 2008-09. I wrote to bank in Aug. 2017 stating that i am unable to verify/confirm alleged double payment of rs.83,654/- and hence i cannot own said alleged liability and remit the amount unilaterally merely on the basis of bank's contention. Hence said matter should be closed with immediate effect with an intimation to me". However, most shockingly bank posted a debit entry to my a/c in Sept. 2017 without serving any notice and by keeping me completely in the dark. Kindly advise whether bank is legally empowered to clandestinely recover said amount after a gap of more than 11 yrs.?
