Dowry demand

I was to marry a guy. We both are NRI and our families reside in India. Things were mutually agreed upon and the date was fixed for Dec 2016 in Feb. The plan was marriage function by bride side, and engagement by groom. The marriage was decided upon in my hometown and my parents were running around and did all the down payments. Multiple requests for them to pay their share were delayed. In November, after Roka, and all invitation been sent, demands increased. Like the money during Roka was not enough, and the pending amount be given. With demonetization, new notes to be given. Saree cost. Some were simple like watch with 1000$ cash (this is for groom only). Some were subtle, like my elder son was gifted a car by his in laws, you should give something like that so that he can mention to friends. Later it was help in buying a house in usa to furnishing our household. my Dad said he does not believe in it, so 20 days before marriage grooms mom said, cancel the function that was from our side we come a day later, and refused to pay any money for cancellation charges. "not a penny". We asked at least to then share marriage function, and her response was "not a penny". I asked my boyfriend if he can marry me in temple, and after talking to mom, he said, not mentally settled now, will take some time (indefinite) and then will tell if can marry. All this is verbal, and they never cancelled the wedding, just postponed it indefinitely. Do I have any legal standing
